About Citi-Sprint

Citi-Sprint has been providing inner- city delivery services in Cape Town for more than 25 years. The company was founded in 1985 by Andy McDonald, after arriving in Cape Town from Zimbabwe where he started and managed DHL International's Harare operation for three years.

Although Andy had the desire to run his own business, it certainly did not happen without the usual accompanying doubts and fears. He nevertheless persevered, and his research indicated that, although many courier companies operated in and from Cape Town, none of them seemed interested in inner- city deliveries. In fact, they viewed this segment of the express deliveries market as more headache and hassle than worthwhile.

Despite being advised by many not to go ahead with his plans, Andy decided to give these inner-city deliveries a go. With no established model for this kind of operation in place, a road of trial and error - and plenty of the latter - was inevitably traveled. Many a day Andy wondered whether he should have heeded that earlier advice, but as more effective operating systems were introduced and procedures and marketing strategies were put in place, the business started to grow and show a profit. In 1987 the Bicycle Brigade was added as a document and small parcel delivery service specifically for businesses in the central business district.

In 1990 Chris Crewdson joined Andy, bringing 10 years of courier experience gained first at Sky Couriers and later at XPS, into the business. Another dimension was added by introducing Dawn Wing as a national service. In 1999 Dawn Wing was sold and became a subsidiary of diversified logistics company, The Laser Group (Pty) Ltd. Bicycle Brigade had also been sold as a going concern in 1990.

1994 saw Citi-Sprint taking top honours as the local winner in the Small Business Division of the Enterprise of the Year competition jointly sponsored by the then Chamber of Trade & Small Business, the Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut, and Old Mutual.

Various local services by Citi-Sprint include a 60 – 90 minute express peddler service in the CBD, a same day service across the Peninsula, and a special service for urgent deliveries. We queue at the bank, the Embassy or SARS, and even collect post and do banking daily for many clients.

We also offer national and international courier, and road-freight.

Citi- Sprint employs 50 staff members, is rated as a Level 2 BEE contributor, and has 35 vehicles on the road. Most of our staff members have been with Citi-Sprint for quite some time, in some instances 21 and 18 years respectively, but on average 8 years. Strong business relationships have therefore being forged over the years between our staff members and our clients, and providing a truly personalised service is therefore a philosophy that we live by on a daily basis. And Andy remains very much a hands-on member of the company, always willing to take a client's call.

Citi-Sprint is on call 7 days a week, including public holidays. Citi-Sprint does not get sick, does not take leave, have vehicle accidents or any personnel issues. We take the hassle out of your life to allow you to focus on your core business. We even fill the gaps – we will 'temp' when your own driver gets ill, takes leave, goes on strike or writes the company van off!

Outsourcing one's non-core functions to specialists such as ourselves has become the norm in most businesses today. This is exactly where Citi-Sprint adds enormous value to your organization and your bottom-line!

Although members, management and staff alike have extensive experience in the courier industry and all take a hands-on approach in the company, it is impossible for a single carrier to satisfy all of your requirements. Therefore we work closely with a few associates to provide tailored solutions to our clients while at the same time accommodating their specific requirements.

Our relationship with these associates has been established over many years, and although we choose 'the best man for the job' so to speak, the client still enjoys the benefit of dealing with only one courier.
